Cute picture, but if you think the words were used incorrectly you may not understand the concept or perhaps you misunderstood the sentance.  A nice piece of equipment like a thermopen is very precise and, with great repeatability, will give you the incorrect temperature unless it is calibrated to also deliver an accurate temperature.

You know, I think I did add some gypsum. Our water is a little soft here (new orleans). Can't remember how much off the top of my head, or if it was this batch or the batch before that. I'm at the Saints game now, or I'd check my records. 
I appreciate all the feedback, and have ruled out a bad thermometer (2x checked it in boiling water) and lack of stirring (I always stir before getting a temp). Feel like that leaves bad crush or stale malt. None of my AG batches have been, well, good, but this last one was exceptionally bad.

We had a similar issue when we first started grinding our own grain, took a couple batches to get the grind just right. If you are grinding your own, I would examine that as well as looking into the previous comments.

I agree with this. We actually had our first 10 batches of AG turn out fantastically only to watch our next 10 efficiency slip into the gutter (and some were very watery). Suspecting our local homebrew store grain mill, we bought our own grain mill and have never looked back. Our efficiency and maltiness are both through the roof - especially with any wheat/rye beers where there is no husk.
