Matthew Weide of Minneapolis, MN, member of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association, won a gold medal in Category #25: Melomel (Fruit Mead) during the 2014 National Homebrew Competition Final Round in Grand Rapids, MI. Weide’s Melomel (Fruit Mead) was chosen as the best among 127 final round entries in the category and helped earn the 2014 NHC Meadmaker of the Year title.

- 13.0 lb wildflower honey (5.9 kg)
- 16.0 oz key lime juice (473 mL)
- 3 gallons water (11.3 L)
- 3 packs Lalvin 71B-1122 dry yeast
- “Re-hydrated 71B-1122 yeast with Go-ferm, pitched into must after being properly mixed and oxygenated. Staggered nutrient additions over 5 days of DAP and Fermaid K (amounts per mfg.) Wine whip for oxygen intake for first 5 days. I then shake the vessel for another 10 days to degas. Add 8 oz of key lime juice (or to taste) when racking. Super Kleer at packaging.”
