David Byer of Hot Springs, NC, member of the Mountain Ale and Lager Tasters (MALT), won a gold medal in Category 19: Strong British Ale during the 2018 National Homebrew Competition Final Round in Portland, OR with the help of John O'Brien. Byer and O'Brien's English barleywine was chosen as the best among 193 entries in the category.
