Do You Make Yeast Starters?

Yeast starters are a way to grow a single packet of liquid yeast to the optimum cell count for fermenting your specific beer, which varies due to batch size and original gravity. The higher the volume and/or the higher the gravity, the higher the yeast cell count must be to have a quick and clean fermentation.

If you don’t already know, here’s how to make a yeast starter, which includes a method to determine how many yeast cells you need for your specific batch of beer.

While yeast starters are easy to make, plenty of homebrewers opt to purchase enough yeast packs to achieve the desired cell count rather than grow a single pack via yeast starter. We pass no judgments for either method, and as long as you’re fermenting beer, we approve! But, we’re curious…
