Individuality is Powerful
Hello, my name is Donna Reuter. I respectfully ask for your vote to join the AHA Governing Committee.
My interest in beer began as a child with an introduction to brewing from my Grandparents. My Grandparents were a mix of cultures including Arabic, Aborigine and Cherokee Indian. Together, they could be always be found brewing something in the backyard. I was fascinated by the process, and my Grandparents took notice and further encouraged my curiosity. As a gift, they gave me several beer recipes and I’ve been home brewing ever since. Our favorite recipes included Prickly Pear and Paw Paw fruit. While my Grandparents were pleased, my mother was not at all enthused. She always showed her displeasure that I could brew beer but couldn’t bake a cake.
I considered myself very lucky when I met and married my husband of 23 years, who also loves to brew. We have been members of the AHA for 15 years and I love competing against him in the competitions. When I think of all the awards we have won, I am most proud of the one I received for the Malt Liquor beer I brewed. As a reward, it was brewed by a professional brewer and put on their tap.
Presently, I am a beer judge with a goal to rank at the National BJCP level. I have judged in hundreds of beer competitions and I am familiar with the hard work and anticipation that goes into these events. I am also currently employed at two breweries. I have met people from all walks of life, and from all over the world. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is when I encounter patrons who say, “I don’t know what I want to drink”. I’m so happy to hear those words, because while it is presented as a challenge, I ask them what they normally drink and I use my knowledge of that style and suggest a similar beer style that we are serving. It never fails to impress, and the customers are satisfied. With pride and passion, I explain that I’ve been a home brewer for years.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Education, and by utilizing my studies in this field, I can offer my knowledge and insight on how to plan, implement ideas and reach our goals as home brewers.
My goal as a member of the AHA Governing Committee, would be to create a program to expand and bring in more diverse members. I would also like to encourage more homebrewers to speak up about any issues they are facing, so we can resolve them. After all, home brewers are the backbone to this art.
My extensive knowledge of beer and familiarity with the AHA would make me a perfect candidate. I would very much appreciate your support and vote. Cheers!
