My name is Mickey Baeta, I live in Maui and been home brewing for over 20 years. I grew up in the Oakland/ San Francisco Bay Area and retired after a 30 year career in law enforcement. My wife and I retired to the island in 2005 and instead of retiring, built a small farm in Upcountry Maui. In 2005 myself and several home brewers, not hard to find, started the Brew Maui Home Brew Club. We had a great sponsor in Maui Brewing Company that helped our club get started. Our yearly contest in conjunction with the Maui Brewers Festival draws 60 to 100 entries each year.
Brewing in the islands has its own challenges, one is getting resources, grains, hops and equipment… Membership can come and go, we may have 12 members one year then 30 the next. We have to be resourceful and that allows for us to become very dedicated to our home brew craft.
The biggest issue I and other home brewers in the State of Hawaiian are working on is the commitment to update and change the Hawaiian State laws as they reference to home brewers. The bottom line is that I will not rest till we change the state and county laws to protect our craft.
I have been a member of the AHA and a dedicated to the education of home brewers as well as the protection of our craft. It would be an honor for me to serve on the American Homebrewers Association Board.
When in doubt, time to brew…
