My name is Sal Mortillaro II and I am running to be a part of the AHA Governing Committee.

I have been homebrewing since 2010 and am a member of the Mystic Krewe of Brew (where I am currently the clubs Education Director) as well as the Big Easy Homebrewers.  I have been a member of the AHA since 2010 and am currently a Lifetime member and a member of the Competition Committee.

Homebrewing has been a very important aspect of my life which I have been extremely interested, involved, and passionate about since getting into it.  I regularly encourage those who are interested to try the hobby themselves and regularly lend out my “extra” homebrew kit and assist those who want to give it a try.  I love the comradery of the AHA and its members and have made many lifelong friends as a result.

I have been a BJCP judge since 2012 and currently hold the rank of Grand Master and am the only mead certified judge in the State of Louisiana.  I serve as an Assistant Southern Representative with the BJCP and cover the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi and as a result interact with homebrewers and homebrew clubs in these states on a regular basis.  As a BJCP exam grader, administrator, and proctor, I believe in the commitment to excellence in beer education.  I am a judge for the GABF, Alabama Craft Beer State Championship commercial competition, competition coordinator for several local competitions throughout the year, and beer reviewer for The Beer Connoisseur Magazine.

Being from the New Orleans area of Louisiana, I would like to bring representation of the South-Central part of the US to the AHA Governing Committee as this area is currently underrepresented with the AHA.

As our South-Central area continues to expand in brewery numbers (especially the States of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and the surrounding area) the interest in getting into our wonderful hobby will increase as well.  I firmly believe the professional brewing industry is mainly fueled by passionate homebrewers who took the leap into going “pro”; therefore, the providing of proper AHA representation to foster the best homebrewing environment possible in the fastest growing homebrewing and commercial brewing region in the country is crucial to all of us as a homebrewing community.

Serving on the AHA Governing Committee I will implement a plan to increase AHA membership numbers nationwide by direct interaction with homebrew clubs, homebrew shops, and breweries.  I will implement a series of suggested educational content and classes that homebrew clubs can share with their members during meetings that can be broken down by time length, topics, etc. in order to help disseminate brewing and style knowledge as much as possible.

Thank you for your time and I hope to gain your confidence and support to represent you on the Governing Committee!
