As homebrew shop owners and advocates of homebrewing, you’re always looking for new ways to bring folks into our beloved hobby. Unfortunately, it’s not always as easy as sending a new customer on their way with a 1-gallon beer kit. But we’re here to help!
Our mission at the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is to bring awareness to homebrewing and empower our members to brew great beer at home. Of course AHA membership offers awesome benefits to members, but it also helps us reach active homebrewers, generate excitement for the hobby, and keep a finger on the pulse of the industry.
To help build this community of dedicated homebrewers, we’ve put together a few easy tips for selling AHA membership gift cards in homebrew shops. This will not only help establish and maintain new interest in homebrewing, but also generate revenue for your homebrew shop.
A special thanks is in order to Brewmented (Longmont, Colo.) and Altitude Homebrew Supply (Denver, Colo.) for sharing some of their proven best practices!
1. Utilize Counter Displays
Keep AHA membership card displays visible and near checkout. We hear from many shops that a gift card is often noticed and then purchased while a customer is waiting for their order to be rung up. Why do you think grocery stores line their checkout aisles with candy?
Don’t have any countertop displays for AHA gift cards? Send me an email and we’ll hook you up!
2. Offer an AHA Member Deal
AHA Member Deals are exclusive offers (e.g., free package of yeast with purchase of $50 or more) and discounts (e.g., 10% off ingredients) for AHA members to enjoy. They’re also one of the best ways to create return customers to your homebrew shop!
By offering an AHA Member Deal, a customer is tempted to purchase an AHA membership gift card. This gift card not only generates revenue for your shop, it also motivates customers to come back to your shop before their next brew day.
Ready to offer an AHA Member Deal? Send me an email and we’ll get it set up!
3. Promote Local AHA Member Deals
If one of your customers sees that there are other AHA Member Deals offered locally in addition to your shop’s offer, they are more likely to purchase an AHA membership gift card. Offering a printed listing of local AHA Member Deals and/or directing customers to the Brew Guru app is a great way to share this with your clientele.
Once a customer sees how many deals they’re missing out on, they won’t be able to pass up the AHA membership gift card!
4. Train Staff on AHA Membership
Informing staff of the full benefits of AHA membership is a great way to empower them to make an AHA membership gift card sale, which generates revenue and builds your pool of return customers. Sure, most people know the AHA for Zymurgy magazine and AHA Member Deals, but we’re so much more!
View our member benefits page for a full run down, and remember that the AHA is ultimately here to promote homebrewing and protect our rights as homebrewers. If you sign up for AHA shop membership, your homebrew shop gets 5 complimentary AHA memberships (among other benefits) to help your staff stay informed and encourage AHA gift card sales!
Want to be an AHA member shop? Send me an email for more information.
5. Opt Into or Create Shop Promos
Like AHA Member Deals, offering one-time promos and offers is a great way to drum up activity in your homebrew shop. To help our shop members sell AHA membership gift cards, we offer promotions that your shop can opt into for participation. These promotions give the customer a free gift with their purchase of a membership gift card.
And it’s easy! We provide your shop with a flyer and promo materials, you sell the memberships, and we fulfill the free gift for that customer. We’re currently in the thick of our annual “Give the Gift” promotion, so opt in to help sell those memberships during the upcoming holiday season!
