Brewers Association Announces New “That’s Independence You’re Tasting” Campaign

As part of its mission to promote and protect America’s small and independent craft brewers, the Brewers Association—parent organization of the American Homebrewers Association—has launched the national awareness campaign “That’s Independence You’re Tasting” to educate beer lovers about the craft brewing community and what it means to be independent craft.

There are currently more than 6,600 independent craft breweries operating in the United States. These brewers represent the essence of small American entrepreneurship.

“They’re innovators, collaborators, risk takers, and underdogs who strive to build culture and community and who put beer before the bottom line and people and principles ahead of profit,” says Julia Herz, Craft Beer Program director for the Brewers Association (and also a homebrewer!).

“It’s more important than ever to support transparency around independent ownership of breweries,” says Herz. “So how can a beer lover know if the beer they’re purchasing comes from an independent craft brewer? Seeking beers with the independent craft brewer seal, the upside-down bottle, tells you the brewery is certified independent.”

In 2017, the Brewers Association launched the independent craft brewer seal to help consumers identify beer produced by independent brewers. Today, more than 3,700 breweries representing 80 percent of the volume of craft beer brewed in the United States have opted to use the seal, and beer lovers are now seeing it on bottles, cans, growlers, tap handles, and menus.
