Colorado Entrepreneurs Compete for a Good Cause

By Hannah Annalora

Colorado Startup Brews is a professional homebrew association that brings together all the things that make Colorado great: entrepreneurship, craft beer, and charitable giving. In its inaugural year, ten startups competed in a Denver office suite where, in just over two hours, the kegs were kicked and bottles were emptied.

“The excitement for an event like CSB was evident from the start,” said Ryan Gall, avid homebrewer and three-time Colorado Startup Brews champion. “The turnout was so far beyond expectations that we had to turn people away at the door due to fire code regulations.” The evening concluded with the awarding of commemorative tap handles to the brewers of the winning beers.

Fast forward to 2019, and the competition has blossomed into the Colorado technology community’s nod to the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Colorado Startup Brews 2019 is expected to host over 50 Colorado-based companies, and more than 1,000 members will come together to judge the best brews.

“Colorado Startup Brews has been great to work with all around,” stated Robert Johnson of Concept3D, a 2018 competition winner. “It was fun brewing beer as a team, having our design team submit their labels to the label contest, and meeting all the various local startups.”

As the competition continues to grow each year, it becomes a more prominent part of the community and helps a wonderful cause. Colorado Startup Brews’ charitable partner this year is the Dear Jack Foundation. Their team provides impactful programming that directly benefits adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer to improve quality of life and create positive health outcomes from treatment to survivorship for patients and their families.

“Colorado Startup Brews has been a fantastic way for the Dear Jack Foundation to connect with the startup community. With over $60,000 raised for our foundation over our partnership, Colorado Startup Brews and the startup community have helped sustain our quality of life programs for young adults with cancer well into the future,” said Andrea Schwartz, executive director of the Dear Jack Foundation.

Colorado Startup Brews is a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) sanctioned brewing competition. Offsite BJCP judging will occur on Saturday, September 7th. The members’ judging event will occur September 13th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the McNichols Civic Center Building. To learn more or get involved, please visit costartupbrews.com
