Zymurgy Mobile App Now Available

We know our readers love Zymurgy. Heck, it is one of the best perks of being an American Homebrewers Association (AHA) member! But we also know that Zymurgy issues are subject to warranted abuse: stains from spilled sparge additions, burns from your turkey fryer, sticky pages from a boil-over—the list goes on.

So what better way to have issues of Zymurgy magazine accessible at your very fingertips than a mobile version of the magazine for iOS and Android users? Our brand new app, available for free, allows members to download issues of Zymurgy and access them at any time.

Imagine this: you are sitting on a flight to Germany—on your way to tour the Altstadt obviously—and you forgot your favorite issue of Zymurgy. Scary, we know, but fear not! Each issue you have downloaded is completely functional without phone or internet service!

Issues currently date back through 2011, with plans in the works to add more issues.

Get to Know the Zymurgy App

As with any mobile app, it will take some exploring to get used to all the Zymurgy app has has to offer. The app work similarly across all operating systems, but there are some minor differences. Please see the notes below for the rundown of each operating system.

iPhone/iPad

The Zymurgy app is optimized for iPhone 4 or higher, and iPad and iPad mini running iOS6 or higher. iPhone 3G/S users may need to do a hard restart of the Zym app if not prompted for login credentials. An update is in the works for iOS5 users.

Download the application from the App Store. After the download completes, click the Zymurgy icon to run the app. When the app opens, you will be prompted to enter your HomebrewersAssociation.org username and password.

Once logged in, you will be brought to a list of Zymurgy issues with download icons. Click on the issues you wish to download to your device. All downloaded issues can be accessed with or without a network connection.

But what if you only want to download the issues that have topics on mead, for example? Easy! In the same view where you select issues to download, select the magnifying glass on the top right corner to open a search field. Type in “mead,” or another term, and all available issues with this topic will be returned.

Searching can also be done within an issue. Select one of the issues you downloaded to open it. Select the list icon on the top right corner to open an interactive and searchable table of contents. Enter in the term you wish to search or select a column, department, feature or recipe from the results.

When viewing an issue, you can swipe the screen to the left or right to flip the page backward or forward respectively. Another option is to select the four square icon on the top of the screen to bring up a view of all the pages for quick and easy navigation.

The Zymurgy app will work on mobile phones with Android 2.3 to 4.2.2 operating systems. The app will work on some Android tablets, but the app was built specifically for mobile phone devices.
