The following explanations were taken from Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher and “Presenting Pilsners” by K.Florian Klemp.

Question 1:

The clear golden lager was so revolutionary that it left brewers scrambling for years to produce a similar product to compete. All golden lagers are offspring of the original Pilsner.

Question 2:

In triple decoction mashing, a portion of the mash is removed, boiled, and added back to the main mash to increase temperature three times. The process was developed long ago as a way of heating a large wooden vessel.

Question 3:

While Plzeň does have the softest water in the world, the water is not acidic. Soft water implies that the water is alkaline which makes the hop bitterness superbly clean and crisp.

Question 4:

Authentic Czech yeast produces a dry, soft maltiness with a touch of diacetyl and is highly recommended.

Question 5:

Using this thinning technique makes it easier to work with the mash and allows much of the enzyme content to remain behind in the thin portion, leaving it unaffected by the boiling of the decoction.
