Spirit of Homebrew

alpineLOGO

Once again, we raise a glass to those breweries that, though small in production, score high with beer lovers. We determine the Spirit of Homebrew Award by taking a brewery's total number of votes and dividing it by the brewery's annual production in number of barrels.

1. Alpine Beer Co., Alpine, Calif
2. Russian River Brewing Co., Santa Rosa, Calif.
3. AleSmith Brewing Co., San Diego, Calif.
4. The Bruery, Placentia, Calif.
5. Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Dexter, Mich.

Gerard Walen 06.30.11

Why oh why was Florida beer shunned in this list? Has no one ever tasted the sweet ambrosia produced by Cigar City? The over-the-top bite of Florida Beer Co. Swamp Ape DIPA?

Ralph B. Craig Jr 06.30.11

Wow there are only 3 Lagers on the list of top beers and Sierra Nevada's Summerfest Lager is not on it.

Michael Dieterle 06.30.11

Gerald, Do they distribute outside of Florida? We have to know about them/be able to drink them to be able to vote on them! Sad to not see Anderson Valley Brewing on this list. They're still one of my favorites.

James Handy 06.30.11

Nice List, but pretty meaningless. It's a simple poll, so only breweries with the biggest national distribution can win. That's why you see so much Dogfish, Stone, New Belgium, etc., stuff that you find at Safeway.

James Navia 06.30.11

There is definitely a reason why these breweries have the biggest distribution. If their beer wasn't good then they wouldn't be so popular, and you can't make a comparison with the distribution of the big guys either. Just because they are readily available doesn't mean they aren't the best or close to it.

Flying Dutchman 06.30.11

I do not approve of ties on a subjective list. A 6-way tie for 20th place??? Come on. Plus the Sierra Torpedo is terrible.

James Handy 06.30.11

I also don't understand how there could be a 6 way tie if there was "a record number of votes" It suggests only a handful of votes at 20th place. I live in the Northwest and to me, most of these are second rate compared to what I can find locally and I'm sure that's the case in Florida too. If you've never tasted it, you won't vote for it.

Kevin Ebberts 06.30.11

And Pliny takes it again! Something tells me that win can't be tainted as a result of overwhelming distribution, seeing as you need a pick up with a bed full of ice if you don't live in Santa Rosa.

John Baker 06.30.11

I agree about Anderson Valley. Was kinda thinking I'd see some Coronado Brewing Co. on here as well. Their "Idiot IPA" is phenomenal. It's distributed fairly well, I'm guessing. I found it in Charlotte in a double deuce.

Ben Mackie 07.01.11

This list should be renamed. Best Macro-micro brews in the country. How can Asheville, NC win best beer town in the USA last year and not get one beer on the list? You should explore some of the smaller breweries out there.

Chadwick Anderson 07.01.11

I love Pliny, but IMO, I think Lagunitas' Hopstoopid is better. I'm very surprised that none of the Lagunitas' brews are on this list even though the Brewery itself ranks. My four favs from Lag...Hopstoopid, Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin', Waldo's Special Ale (Limited Release), and IPA.

John Hensley 07.05.11

Would love to try Russian River Pliny the Elder but I think it is limited to west coast is this correct ?

Sarah Brown 07.08.11

So proud of San Diego and the beer love here. I love seeing Alpine get recognition here. I could really go for a Nelson IPA right now. MMMMM!!

Sarah Brown 07.08.11

and CA needs Bell's out here!

Aaron 07.12.11

Agreed that Cigar City, out of Tampa, is making world-class beers right now. They currently sit with three beers in the Top 15 on Rate Beer for 2011 alone. However, they have limited distribution (Fl, GA, and NY - I think). Find a bottle of Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout. The next release should be sometime in March 2012.

Matthew Gagan 07.15.11

Two OR breweries and one of them is Rogue? They're okay but I can find 50 beers better than Dead Guy within walking distance of my house. Weird list.
