AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competitions

AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program    AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program

Is your club, brewery, fair, festival, or organization thinking about putting on a homebrew competition?

If the answer is "yes," register your competition with the Sanctioned Competition Program (SCP), a program jointly administered by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program provides resources to help make organizing homebrewing competitions easier and more fun. The SCP also establishes competition standards and procedures to assure homebrewers that their beers are handled and judged in the best possible fashion, creating results that are accurate, meaningful, and educational.

Why should I register my competition?

First, registering your competition helps to get the word out to potential entrants. When you register, your competition is listed in the AHA Events Calendar as well as the BJCP Competition Calendar. If you register at least two months before the competition, the competition will also be published in Zymurgy, the Journal of the American Homebrewers Association, so that homebrewers nationwide can find and enter your competition.

Second, you receive the following AHA/BJCP sanctioned competition materials (via e-mail) from the BJCP Competition Director:

  • A letter describing how to use the SCP materials
  • A contact list of BJCP judges in your state or multi-state region (you specify the area during the registration process)
  • Mailing labels for the BJCP judge list
  • Judge participant list to use for judge check-in
  • Competition Evaluation form for judges and stewards

Third, the AHA publishes the best-of-show winners in Zymurgy, and provides one certificate for free entry to the AHA National Homebrew Competition to award to the Best of Show (BOS) winner.

Additional competition forms and procedural information are available at the BJCP Competition Center.

When should I register my competition?

Be sure to register your competition at least TWO (2) MONTHS prior to the competition day in order to meet the publishing deadlines for Zymurgy. Ideally, you should register your competition as early as possible to inform potential entrants of the style(s) being judged so they can start brewing!

How much does it cost to register my Competition?

There is a $35 US fee for registering your competition with the AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program. This administation fee is payable by credit card through a secure PayPal account. Register a Competition.
