Where do breweries buy their ingredients?
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:06:42 am »
The small brewery owner that I know here in South Korea is looking for another and/or different malt supplier.  He's looking to start making newer styles of beer that require more than just the base 2-row, cara-munich, wheat, and black malt.  Where do breweries get their malts?  He has a limited ability to get diverse malts from his local supplier... who by the way is leary about some of the more esoteric grains... haha... like flaked oatmeal, rye, and acidulated malt.  Anyway, if anyone has any pointers on where I might find him a good malt wholesaler, I'd appreciate it.  Cheers, Bill

I get most of my malts from country malt group - http://countrymaltgroup.com/ - I highly doubt they freight across the pacific. But you could call them and ask. My hops are contracted separately. I could PM you that info if you need but I have no idea if he could help you and most likely you would have to wait until next harvest.

Aren't you geographically closer to Australia, and New Zealand, and Japan, and China?
I'd ask brewers in those countries where they get their supplies.

I would contact maltsters directly (Weyernmann...) to ask who is their distributor in your part of world.

If that's all they're looking for, couldn't they just buy bulk Quaker Oats or whatever from a grocery supplier?

This is what I would do too.

You might also want to get in touch with one or more of the Alaska breweries. I'd imagine they all get their stuff shipped from Seattle, which may or may not make sense for you, but at least they'd have an answer.

I wouldn't bother with Alaskan Brewing, they buy their malt by the rail car ;)

The smaller ones might do something else, I don't know.

Alaska and Korea are world apart.

But in a similar situation in that almost everything comes in by ship.

True.
Ship from Germany / Great Britain to core goes thru suez canal.
Ship to alaska goes from Seatle.

I am not aware of any international shipments of domestic 2-row.
Brewers in New Zeland or Norway brewing American beers use Thomas Fawcett.
