Did I ruin my yeast?
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:05:50 pm »
Hey all, just a quick question. I accidentally left a vial of White Labs American Farmhouse Blend (WLP670) at room temp (actually around 60 degrees) for about 24 hours. I don't plan on brewing or even making a starter for a couple weeks. Did I ruin it or should I just stick it back in the fridge and hope for the best? Thanks!

Unless it froze or got really hot, it will be just fine.  Sitting around at 60 for a day won't hurt it.  Stick it back in the fridge.

Weird, I did the exact same thing with the exact same strain just this week.  And I also just stuck it back in the fridge.

RDWHAHB indeed!

If you think about fermentation, yeast that has finished settles to the bottom of the fermenter and sits there at room temperature for days or even weeks. It is not quite the same as being in a vial, but just evidence that it will survive at room temperature. With a starter you'll be fine.

+1.  I would definitely make a starter when you use it.  But it should be just fine.

Also, when you do use it, I would open it cold and s-l-o-w-l-y.  You probably have a good amount of pressure built up in there from it sitting out.  If you let it warm back up and just twist off the cap, you are likely to have yeasties all over the place!
