Would you pay this much?
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:13:33 pm »
http://www.beerpulse.com/2012/03/westvleteren-xii-release-pushed-back-to-june-suggested-retail-price-set-at-85/

Maybe, considering where the profits go. However, it would be awfully tough since I know what yeast, hops, sugar, and grain they use and could brew at least 20 gallons myself for that pirce.

I wouldn't pay that, but given they're only releasing 7,760 packs in the US, I doubt I'll even see one.

If it makes it to a store near me consider it sold.

aroudn 15000 packs to the US, just 7760 east of the mississippi.

I don't think I will be buying one. I hope they make lots of money and whenever I make to belgium I will try it.

I think I paid about 30 euros for mine. Bought it for the glassware.

That changes everything  ;D

I imagine some of it will hit Chicago, but given the frenzy around rare releases here, I wouldn't try to find it.

I just won't pay that much for 3 beers even though I can afford it. Even if the glass is crystal... And I would not be surprised to see some of these show up at Central Market.

Edit: 6 bottles two glasses. Drop the price to $50 then maybe I'd spring for them.

6 beers and 2 glasses for $85 is a lot cheaper than going the black market route...

That is obscene. And not in a good way.

We have a shop in town that carries all three and it was nice to be able to say I have had it although I won't be in a hurry to drop another 20 pounds for a bottle. It's a good beer but deff not in my top 10.

It's not that much.  Figure the glass is $10.  That means 6 beers for $75.  Rochefort around here goes for about $7-8 a bottle, figure $45 a six pack.    My prediction is that this $85 MSRP goes right out the window and retails sell it for more like $130.

I thought the beer wasn't that good - it was the trip that all the fuss was about.

I'll put that $85 towards a plane ticket. You can keep the glassware and fancy booklet.

At one time I had 72 bottles of Westy 12 in my cellar.  We called ahead reserved a pickup time and drove away with 3 cases of Westy 12 for just under $150.  We estimated that it cost us $6/bottle to bring them back to the US if you included the car rental and checked baggage fees.  We have drank, traded or given away about half of the bottles.

It is a good beer, but not worth all of the hype.  I do enjoy cracking one open every now and then, sharing it with my brother who was on the trip with me and my wife who is still jealous she was not able to go on the trip with us.  Just a reminder of a great vacation in a grand location.  It makes the beer priceless to me.

I concur with kylekohlmorgen, put that money toward a plane ticket...
