I am a devout pastafarian and therefore have no need to give things up during lent.

In all serious though giving up beer is pretty harsh.  Good luck on that.  When I was catholic i pretty much never made it 40 days on giving anything up unless it was something I didn't care about.

If you want to follow the example of Bavarian monks, the only food you can have during lent is Doppelbock.

Lent seems to come early this year. I have to check on my Doppelbock tonight to see if I can have the celebratory one tomorrow night. Thanks for reminding me.

shouldn't this be in the pub?

Or is it here becauseit is religious in nature and therefore not allowed in the pub?

Its about beer, it is a beer discussion, not a religious discussion. As long as every one is cool this is not a problem to discuss. I don;t look at discussing Lent as the same as proselytizing or discussing religion. For that matter, it is more of a lifestyle choice than a religious discussion. In other words, saying you are a member of a particular church is not the same as discussing religion. For instance, I am confirmed Lutheran but I go to an Episcopal church now out of convenience. I am not discussing religion though, I'm just pointing out a lifestyle fact.

So, anyway, keep it cool and it will be cool. Be respectful and it will remain respectful. In other words, DON'T BE A DICK! ;)

BTW: No, I don't give up beer for Lent. Have given up bourbon a few times - it sucked, so now I give up brussels sprouts.

AFAIAC, this is on the edge of being in the pub.  Due to Keith's comments, I'll leave it here for now, but reserve the right to move it or delete it if things get carried away.

EDIT: on second thought, I'm gonna move it.  There can be beer related topics in the pub and this seems to fit there better.

I found that if I give up my IPA for about a week,
when I do drink one
my taste buds think it is just about the most hoptastic thing imaginable. :o

Seriously, try it.

I'm just looking forward to that beer volcano.

I regularly go Monday AM through Friday late afternoon without a beer all week and I agree - an IPA sure does taste fantastic when its the first beer you have had in several days!!

I lent beer one time, but I didn't care for the form in which it was returned to me.

+1 to major and pinnah's comments about how great a beer tastes after laying off brew for a week - it really does clean the palate, so to speak.

I tried giving up meat one Lent. very tough.

I've a buddy who gives up all alcohol during Lent every year.  He loses 15-20lbs every time - kinda freaky.
