Lyle's Golden Syrup
« on: February 25, 2013, 06:31:00 pm »
I'm getting ready to make an 80 Schilling that calls for Lyle's. I can get everything I need at my LHBS except that. I know I can order it online but I've read that a 50/50 blend of light and dark Karo syrup is a reasonable substitute. Sound right?

Do you have a grocery store that has ethnic/national foods in a section? If you have a British expat area in Indy you should be able to find it cheaper than the LHBS.

It is cheaper than the LHBS at a grocery store. Not as cheap as buying it in England at a grocery store, if you happen to be there on vacation. Then you see what the importing does to the price.

I did a web search and found that two of my local grocery stores carry it! :D

I found and purchased some on Amazon, for several batches of an Old English Ale recipe found in Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer book. Barrel aged the beer for several months. Lyles Golden syrup is some pretty tasty stuff. Glad I tried it, and will use it again in the future.

It's pretty standard stuff in the baking goods section of my supermarket. It's generally near the sugar, YMMV.

Bought two bottles at a local grocery store. Very tasty stuff and expensive but I don't plan on using a whole lot
of it. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's got this lovely buttery flavor, but not in a diacetyl way. I use it in my Barleywines to dry things out a little. I miss living in the UK where it's a buck per pound in every grocery store. I use it a lot in baking too, and corn syrup just isn't the same.
