Is it too late to plant hops for this season?  Should I plant anyway in hops of next year's hops being even better?

It's not too late. I've planted as late as May with no ill effects. Go for it.

Where are you located?  I'm in New England and don't plant on putting my hops in the ground until after Mother's Day.  I think I put some in last year at the end of April and the suckers had popped back up this year.

go for it, getting it in the ground this year really increases the chance you'll get something next year

I dug up my hop plants last year and transplanted them the first week of September, they are all growing, I go by the old saying of "any month with the letter R in it" is fine for pruning or transplanting.

You can plant hops just about any time of the year (with the exception of downright freezing weather). Spring is a good time. If you have healthy rhizomes, you may even get a small crop the first year. Regardless, they WILL grow, it's almost impossible to kill the little buggers, they are very hearty. Be prepared for the next year's crop because it will be much bigger! Third year and up they wil go crazy. Have fun!!
