« on: January 13, 2016, 01:07:44 pm »
Never seen this before. Wlp029 slurry I collected over weekend.

Strange separate layer on top , beer, than thick slurry below. Been in fridge since Sunday.

I have seen the 3 layers before, but only after 1 day of harvesting, and not nearly as distinct, and did not last for more than a day or so. Not a regular harvester though, so not much experience

Almost looks like krausen to me, but that doesn't seem likely with that strain and such a small amount of beer in the jar. Any chance this is actually a top-cropping English yeast instead?

thinking some of the break and whirlfloc made it into the carboy, then the co2 pushed it up in my mason jar?

its combination of yeast and spongy material.

I always thought that layer was dead cells and proteins mostly.

Definitely seen it before, not sure if it is from O2 exposure as harvested or exactly what, but it usually falls back into the bottom layer if left to its own devices.  It could be that the rousing just caused it to finish off its full attenuation?

Seen that lots of times before with that particular strain especially. I think it has something to do with characteristics of a top cropping strain, least that's my best guess.

First slurry harvest I've done with 029. Back when I used it more frequently I hadn't graduated to slurry collection.
