What Category for NHC2016? Red IPA 17C or Amber Ale 11A ?
« on: March 01, 2016, 01:50:29 pm »
So I brewed a beer with the intention of the category of Red IPA.  However, the final color of the beer is darker than red and looks more like an amber ale. However, it is a hoppy beer. If you hold up a poured glass to the light, you can see the red/copper look of a Red Ipa but otherwise it looks amber.  I love how the beer turned out but Im not sure what to send it in for.  Thanks in advance for the help

I'm confused. None of those numbers match the specified BJCP 2015 categories.  Isn't NHC following BJCP 2015?

Competitions can define their own categories

NHC uses a modified BJCP 2015

Why not Brown IPA?

its more amber than brown.  it shows copper/red in light.

Brown IPA and Red IPA have the same color specs 11-19 SRM.  American Amber Ale is 10-17 SRM and Brown Ale is 18-35.  So if the color fits American Amber Ale, it will probably fit Brown or Red IPA.

This is what I think if it's hoppy enough. BUT, 17C is going to be a stupid full category. It might make since to enter as an American Amber if the hop profile lines up with the guidelines.

I used Azacca and  Cascade hops,  it came out hoppy but not as hoppy as I wouldve liked. Im sure 11A will have less entries but not sure if it fits the category?

Read the guideline and see if it makes sense to you.

Low to moderate hop aroma, moderate to high hop flavor. If it's as hoppy as SNPA, I'd enter it as an American Amber.
