Kona Big Wave Golden Ale Clone
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:08:52 pm »
I normally don't drink golden ales, but this one sounded good when I was asked to brew it. It's a nice change of pace from what I normally brew. So...what do you think?

5.5 Gallon Batch
OG = 1.047

92% American Two Row = 8 lb 8 oz
5 % Caramel/Crystal 10L = 8 oz
3 % Caramel/Crystal 20L = 5 oz

FWH = 6 g Citra and 6 g Galaxy
10 Minute = 6 g Citra and 6 g Galaxy
0 Minute = 16 g Citra and 16 g Galaxy

Big Wave has become my favorite summer beer even though it looks to be a year-rounder. Where are your IBUs ending up? Are you planning on having the same 4.4% ABV?

Yeah... I have not had the beer either. They had the hops listed on their website and I asked my uncle who requested it of the taste. Smooth bitterness with little to no aroma. My IBUs are close to 30, but with the first addition being first wort, I figure it would be closer to the taste of the listed 21 IBUs. I'm looking to keep the ABV under 5.

I think it will be good regardless. In Big Wave, I get a lot of hop flavor vs. aroma. It is similar to Widmer's Citra Blonde but better in my opinion. I would consider balancing your 10 minute and 0 minute additions. That is just from my impressions of the beer...

Let us know how this turns out. I had that beer over looking the beach in Maui while eating a great cheeseburger. I have very fond memories. It was definitely one of the better Kona offerings IMHO. Of course I am a big fan of blondes.

I just took the blow off tube today and put on the airlock. By the looks of the color in the carboy, I'm thinking I could have left out the 20L. We'll see for sure in a few weeks when it hits the glass! Nonetheless, I think it will taste good

I just tried this over the weekend. It's pretty darn good. Very mild with a pleasant citrous hop character. I think this will be renewed for one of the four beers I have on tap at my wedding in May.

I found Big Wave Golden Ale at Publix in Destin, FL. First time I have seen this one on the main land.  Maybe they are distributing near you now.

Loving it.

I have seen it a handful of times locally. I still have yet to buy it though haha. I have had their Fire Rock Pale Ale though... it's good.

This recipe looks great!  I eliminated the Citra FWH addition to bring it down to 25 IBU, and went with 12 oz of C-10 instead of the two separate types.  I haven't brewed it yet but I'm really looking forward to it.  How did the color turn out on your batch?
