Help! Liquid yeast smells strange
« on: June 27, 2020, 10:47:08 am »
Hey all,

I bought a pack of Omega OYL-114 with a mfg date of May 21, 2020. I made a starter this morning. When I smelled the yeast pack, after I pitched the yeast in the starter, it has a slight sour smell. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to ruin a batch of beer with a bad pack of yeast.

Cheers,
Brandon

If the starter smells OK for a starter, I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks. The starter did end up smelling OK. We also contacted the LHBS where we got it. They ended up getting in contact with Omega Yeast Labs.
Omega's response was that some of their yeast packs have a tangy smell to them. They said it should still be fine and they guarantee all of their yeast.
I was super impressed with our LHBS for taking the time to contact Omega and that Omega had someone available on a Saturday.
To make a long story short, we used the OYL-114 and it is currently bubbling away!

Cheers,
Brandon
