I use glass blow-off tubes in beakers for my "airlocks". I used to keep my fermenters in the little room underneath the stairs (what we call Harry Potter's bedroom). The constant bloook, bloook, bloook, in the quiet of the night irritated my wife. With multiple fermenters, the out-of-time cacophony of bloooking drove her crazy (she is a pianist). We bought a window-shaker air conditioning unit, converted one of the bathrooms into the fermentorium and gave Harry his bedroom back.
I loved the blooking myself, but as the saying goes, "When Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!"
That goes double for lack of sleep.
