can i brew beer and bake bread in the same house?
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:24:06 pm »
i'd be brewing and baking outside the house, in basically the same place.  uncovered area.  is this ok?  i heard you can't bake and brew in the same place due to the different types of yeasts.

thanks in advance.

I do it inside all the time, and it always works.  Not sure why this could ever be an issue unless you're sprinkling baker's yeast in your beer.

In fact..... People take yeast cakes after fermentation and make bread with them. I hear Belgian yeasts make great bread.

There is a guy in our club who brews in this garage and has a small comercial bakery in the room just inside.  He has been doing this for a long long time.  His beers and his bread are both excellent.

I've baked bread and brewed in the same area, on the same day, with no problems.
Cheers!

I do both in my kitchen. I'm just careful to keep my sourdough starters away from my pure yeast starters and beers.

Its kind of become a tradition for us on brew day. We use some of the spent grain from the mash and use a bit of cooled wort to wake up the bread yeast. It's like making your beer and eating it too! Go for it!

Agreed, Reinhart is the man when it comes to baking.
