Homebrew Club Insurance

club-insurance

AHA has partnered with West’s Insurance Agency to bring affordable homebrew club insurance to registered clubs that would like to enroll. The insurance is underwritten by Great American Insurance Company (GAIC), which has an A+ AM Best rating – the highest-level rating of an insurer’s financial strength and ability to meet its ongoing obligations.

AHA does not take any marketing fees or commissions from this program to ensure the absolute lowest premiums possible for the homebrewing community.

Interested homebrew clubs can enroll in the insurance program during one of three open enrollment periods for each policy year. Policy terms begin on September 1, December 1, or March 1, depending on which enrollment period they sign up during. All policies end on September 1 of the following year, regardless of start date. The cost per club member is $5.52 for policies starting on September 1 or December 1, and $2.76 for policies starting on March 1.

Overview

To address their exposure, some homebrew clubs have purchased insurance themselves—often at a steep cost, as insurance for individual clubs can be expensive. The AHA-facilitated insurance option provides participating clubs with general liability insurance ($1 million/occurrence; $3 million aggregate) and liquor liability insurance ($1 million/occurrence; $3 million aggregate) that collectively cover both club meetings and club-sponsored events for up to 1,000 attendees—all at a cost to the club of just $5.52 per club member.

2025/2026 Policy Disclaimer: Great American Insurance Group (underwriters) has provided West Insurance a $0.46 increase in the premium per member, bringing the cost per member to $5.52 for the 2025/2026 policy term. The premium rate increase is typical for the type of insurance (General Liability) and the level of alcohol exposure.

In addition to general and liquor liability coverage, West’s Insurance also offers Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance. See below for more details on D&O coverage.

Get your Club Insurance Cost Reimbursed!

Homebrew clubs are eligible to have their general liability and liquor liability premiums reimbursed by the AHA if at least 75% of their club’s members are also current AHA members.

Homebrew clubs that enroll for coverage will be contacted by the AHA after each enrollment period ends with further information regarding reimbursement. Clubs should ensure that their members who are also AHA members have their homebrew club listed in their member profile and verify that their AHA memberships are current. AHA members can log in here: https://homebrewer.memberclicks.net/login#/login. Club members who are not AHA members and would like to join can join here: https://homebrewersassociation.org/membership/join-or-renew.

Directors and Officers Insurance

D&O insurance provides liability coverage for the club’s directors and officers for decisions they make while serving the club in that capacity. Individuals can be held personally liable for these decisions when representing their club, and the D&O insurance provides coverage for costs to defend the directors, officers, and the club against lawsuits.

An example would be if someone alleges that they were discriminated against in the declination of their membership in the club or in the removal of an individual’s membership status. Another example would be if a fellow club member files a suit against the club’s officers because they are unhappy with the direction of the club or the use of funds, etc.

Pricing:

  • Clubs up to 75 members – $300 annual premium
  • Clubs 76-150 members – $400 annual premium
  • Clubs 151 members and higher – $500
  • *The average cost for a club to secure this coverage on an individual basis is $750-$1,000.

D&O limits:

  • $1,000,000 – Per Club
  • $5,000,000 – Aggregate – shared by all clubs
