Stirstarter.com
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:44:43 am »
Before getting into the review, I must state the disclaimer that I know Dan, the owner.  He is in our club.

I bought a stirstarter at the LHBS.  Needed to add to the number of starters going at one time, so this fit the need, and I could use some of my loyalty points at the LHBS.  Here is the link to the web site.
http://www.stirstarters.com/

After a few months of use, it was dropped.  Picked up the flask, it had some dried wort sticking to the stirstarter, which came off, bounced off the edge of the counter and went down to the floor.  It rattled when I picked it up, not good.  I said "Ah Fudge" or something like that.  Opened it up, and the fan had sheared off of the shaft.  Could not glue it back on.

Contacted Dan, said it was my fault for dropping, asking if I could source a fan.  He stands behind his product, and said he would ship me a new one with return instructions for the old one.  The old one ships out as soon as I am done typing this, and go to the USPS.

Thought I would put a good customer service experience on the forum.

I bought mine from a BN-sponsor ( Nikobrew ) for the same price that stirstarter charged.  I love this stirplate and have not had a single problem with it.  Thankfully I have not had any reason to contact the man but it's nice to know he's there if something does come up.

From the web site:

The StirStarter fails to perform for ANY reason, return it to me, and I will repair or replace at no charge.

Dan backs that up.  ANY reason included my dropping it.

Thought I would give a good experience since there was a negative posted earlier.

Good to know.  I will make sure not to surf past this good merchant when it comes time to stock-up.

I like the price, the guarantee and that it comes with a flask and bar. Definitely considering adding one to my list of equipment!

The stir bar is included.  Flask is not.

You also get a strong keeper magnet so that you can retain the stirbar in the flask when pitching th yeast.

Edit:
I see that Dan does have a special with the 2L flask and shipping included for $67.  That is a deal!

At the LHBS, it was about the $42 for just the stirstarter, bar, keeper, and 6V PS.

Would this stir plate work with a 5L flask?  I see the write-ups on most of them talk about working well with a 2L.

It does fine with a 5L flask.  Just make sure the flask is not sticky on the bottom.   >:(

That was the flask size I lifted up, and the stirstarter fell off of.

Yep.  I have used mine for years with 2 and 5 L flasks.  Works great.
