Who is a famous person that you've had a beer with?
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:42:41 pm »
Mine is Billy Carter back in 1977.  In the early days of the Carter years, we did a tour of Plains Georgia.  We took a side expedition onto the side roads and soon located the Carter family home.  We knocked on the door and Lillian answered the door.  Billy came out later and there on the front porch was a keg of PBR.  This was before Billy Beer so he was then known to be a Pabst drinker.  Pabst at the time supplied him with an unlimited supply of beer.

What's your story?

Not really a person, but I did have a beer on the 87th floor of the Empire State building.

If Denny drank alone - could he count that?

I got nothing, not even a beer in a really tall building.

Likewise.  Although, if I could drink with one, it would probably be Billy Joel.

Eugene Cernan.

I don't think he's used to getting recognized in bars.

I guess for me it would be Ringo Starr.
I worked with him in a TV series on PBS 20 years ago.
In my wrap party photo with him, I had a beer ...but his drink of choice (at the time) was CocaCola and VVVSOP brandy (in a styrofoam cup!).

On a more serious note, the month after we wrapped production he went into rehab (I wasn't responsible) and he has managed to stay clean and sober ever since. Kudos to him for that.

By the way, he was a really great, sweet guy, great to be with...and just about what you would expect given his general WTF image and attitude.   A really nice guy.

It was, to say the least, quite a rush to have the opportunity to work  with him.  A high point in my career, to be sure.

I guess it depends on what you consider to be famous. If it means someone who is known by a certain number of people they've never met, I suppose I can name 3:

-Peter Bouckaert from New Belgium
-Mike McColgan, singer from the Street Dogs and original singer of the Dropkick Murphys
-Joe Stange, author of Around Brussels in 80 Beers (and other stuff like thirstypilgrim.com). He's probably laughing already from his inclusion here.

Was it when he was the conductor in Thomas and Friends?  :)

That's the show.  After Ringo left, George Carlin stepped into the role.  Another really kind, classy guy.

Shirly Manson from the band Garbage.  I received back stage passes for one of their concerts and was able to hang out and chat with them after their show.  I had beers with the entire band but didn't talk to the dudes that much. ;D

I'm with you there man!  Is Shirley as gorgeous in person as she is in pictures?  That sure beats my Billy Carter story.
