I agree Mike, I found the "adventurous taste buds" comment a little silly. I didn't care for it at all and would not buy it again. And, FTR, haveing to drink 4 probably felt like drinking 6.  

It's ok.  I do say silly things sometimes.

Seriously, I think it was more than the Summit hops I disliked. The beer had a cooked cabbage character to me. I was seriously thinking there was some DMS going on. Could have been a bad batch, or one that was not properly taken care of before it landed in my glass. That said, I am also not a fan of Summit hops.

I made an IPA with all Summits once when they were first introduced. I subsequently dumped the beer down the drain. It was like chewing on lemon rinds and rubber bands. Never again.

Ok, I picked up a can a few days ago and finally sat down to drink it tonight.  45 minutes later, I still have about half of it left.  The aroma is pleasant enough, but the flavor has lots of garlic scapes and chives.  This is not my favorite beer.

I just had the Gubna at their tap room a few weeks ago and thought it was incredible. Seriously debated having a second, but came to my senses. I definitely didn't get any DMS out of it.

FWIW, I find Summit to be very onion/garlic-y when the beer is young, but that it fades into a great tangerine/grapefruit flavor after a few weeks.

I'm not a big fan of many beers I have had from DFH either. The 60 min is pretty good, though.

I would try the Gubna again if I found it on tap to see if I liked it better. I personally would be gun shy to buy it by the can again.

Oskar Blues was indeed the first craft beer in a can.
While I love just about all of their beers (and they're just up the road in Longmont/Lyons), I haven't really enjoyed Gubna yet.  It was first described to me as intensely citrusy, but, all I got was that garlic/onion thing that everyone else has been mentioning.  Perhaps it was just a particular year's worth of Summit hops that gave it more of a garlic/onion vs citrus character?

I don't even begin to understand all the mechanisms of aroma and taste, but it could be some people do not perceive the garlic and onions and for others it is overwhelming. I'm certainly of the latter variety and if Gubna was offered to me for free I would pass...YMMV.

Exactly!  I brewed an IPA with it and found the same!  I like Summit!  Beveragebob, you dumped yours too soon!   I'll have to seek out some of this Gubna beer you people are talking about.  I don't know if it has arrived in Chicago yet or not.  Don't recall seeing any OB beers yet.  But I have so much homebrew, I don't spend much time at the booze shop these days!

Resurrecting this old conversation. OB revised the Gubna recipe and now uses a blend of Cascade and Summit hops instead of only using Summit. The onions and garlic are gone and it is now a darn respectable double IPA.
