Newport Hops
« on: January 13, 2010, 09:31:08 am »
I received some Newport hops as a prize.  All I see for them is that they are normally a bittering hop.  Anyone ever use them as Flavor/Aroma hops, or for dry-hopping?  Just wondering what kind of characteristics they have.  Always looking for some new twist to my APA.

check the Rogue website - something they do (can't recall right now) features Newports - you could buy it and try it first.

From what I understand, Rogue was basically the pilot/trial brewery for this particular mildew-resistant hop variety. The only current production beer that's using them in the hop bill (that I'm aware of) is the Mogul Madness, but John's utilzed them in various offerings including, but not limited to the I2PA (now XS:IIPA), Hop Heaven, Skullsplitter a.k.a. B3 & some of the JLS releases. I've used them a few times in an American Brown, Robust Porter & an American Stout. I'd report the character similar to Galena or Nugget, but with a cleaner bitterness e.g. Magnum. I've used them as late as KO and can report they really didn't add much except for a bit of earthy/herbal character.  ;)

The Brutal Bitter call(s/ed) for them.  I just brewed the clone recipe and used them for bittering.  Then LOTS of crystal everywhere else.

What recipe is that?  AFAIK, John has always used crystal only for that beer.

I think it came out of Drew's book?  I'll have to check to make sure though.

Ha! I had to go check too. Fortunately, I actually have a copy on my shelf. :)

And yes, traditional brutal bitter has only used Crystal, an imperial ass load as a matter of fact, but a few years back when we were having problems getting enough one of our members asked John about bittering and he said newport would be fine. Thus our recipe got changed.
