Meridian Hops

Has anybody brewed with this new beast yet? I'm thinking about buying a pound, so I would appreciate any reviews.

I got a pound in my freezer, but I haven't tried them out yet. My basement is colder than usual this year, so I'm trying to take advantage of it right now with some alts and lagers. I'll probably do another round of single-hopped pale ales in a couple of months to test out a bunch of new hop varieties I'm sitting on.

I used them to make a single hopped pale for the NHC.  From the small sample of beer I got I would say they are quite nice, very good for a pale ale.  Although like the El Dorado, not mosaic nice. :)

But them, you won't regret it.  Buy some El Dorado too. ;)

Tom...was that one of the beers brewed for Stan Hieronymus's talk last year? I remember tasting a beer with them at his seminar. The beer was very nice.

I've seen you mention Mosaic a few times, so I bought 5 oz from Label Peelers. I couldn't find any bulk rates on them anywhere...I actually had a tough time finding them. So, I'm looking forward to using them. I'm thinking about about using them to finish an IPA that I bitter with Summit. I really haven't thought too far into it yet.

Anyways, I went to order the Meridian and El Dorado hops and once I added the El Dorado hops to the cart, there was not a "sufficient" stock for this amount. I emailed them to see if they actually had some, so I might just be trying the Meridian haha.

I picked up half a pound from Freshops.  Looks like they still have them in stock.

Yes, the four beers were mosaic, meridian, el dorado, and LR.  Mosaic was the runaway favorite.

Ok, I have a pound of Meridian on the way, so I put together a pale ale recipe. Since I'm still relatively new at recipes, be sure to give advice or any adjustments....especially in the malt bill. Thanks!

I call it Meri-Lena Pale Ale...

Batch = 5.5
OG = 1.057
IBU = 49
60 minute mash @ 154

88.5% American 2 Row Pale = 10.75 lb
7.5 % Caramel/Crystal 40L = 1 lb
4% Caramel/Crystal 60L = .5 lb

60 minute = .75 oz Galena
30 minute = .75 oz Meridian
10 minute = .25 oz Galena
10 minute = .25 oz Meridian
0 minute = .75 oz Meridian
Dry Hop = .75 oz Meridian

White Labs 001 California Ale
WYeast 1056 American Ale

Just randomly dry-hopped my pale ale with 2oz of Mosaic. Kegging today - but the sample smell/tastes NICE.

That's an awful lot of crystal malts for my taste. I prefer no more than 3/4lb in 5 gallons... but that's just me - do what suits your taste!

+1 to too much crystal for me, but +1 to do what suits your tastes as well. I'd try to keep the Crystal to a pound or less. Or better yet, swap out the C40 for a pound of Munich and maybe swap the C60 for a half pound of Victory.

Thanks for the advice. I have only brewed one pale ale before. It was my first all grain back in July. I used a pound of each 20L and 40L in that. it was decent. My plan is to brew three in a weekend in March. I want them to all have the same grain bill, so I can just play around with some hops. I plan on doing this recipe, a single hopped Citra, and maybe a 4 C's blend of centennial, cascade, chinook and Columbus. So what I might do is just kick the 40L down to a half a pound.

I personally like at least 10% crystal in my pales and especially in my IPAs. I don't think your amounts are too high but like the others said, do what you think you will like.
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

I like my IPA's to be a bit crisper with less caramel notes. The idea with those are to showcase the hops. A little more caramel back is ok for me in pale ales. I'm still on the fence with this.
