Is it red when you hold it up to a light though?

Definitely.  It needs a good bit of light to get through.  But a bright flashlight on the back of the glass shows the red.

This was the first time I used roasted barley in a beer.  It was 1/2 pound in a 5 gallon batch.  If I brew this again, I'll probably cut that back to 1/4.

I had a similar experience when I first made an Irish Red--it was an Irish Brown. I've found that 2 oz. or so of roasted barley was enough for 5 gallons.

I am looking to do one soon as well. I know there are a couple of strings around about recipe design.

I'm thinking something like:
71% pilsner
20% munich II
8% caramunich III
1% carafa
