I pitched the yeast into a Mandarina Bavaria Kolsch this morning.  First time making a kolsch, so it should be interesting.

8.5lb Pils
0.75lb munich light

1oz Mt Hood @ 60
1oz Mandarina @ 5
1oz Mandarina @ dryhop

Fermented with WY2565.

I'll need to figure out what the next few brews will be so I can reuse that yeast a couple times.

Sounds tasty. I do a kolsch with an ounce of Amarillo thrown in at 5 minutes. I love it.
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

An American Blond Ale with Amarillo at knockout. Making it for my buddies wedding coming up in early Sept. With a 1.046 OG, it should be an easy drinker even for those who don't like tasty beer.

Made Drew's 'Saison de Table' from the session beer article. Nailed all my numbers. Ungodly humidity but good brew day.

My first beer with Brewtan B today, a Munich Helles. Ditched my "low DO" process I've been using lately and did my old method of dumping the water into the mashtun, etc. The foam on top of the mash was an orange color...interesting. Wort was really clear in the second runnings, but the first runnings looked normal. I did notice a crazy amount of taige in the mash though. That isn't anything new to me though, it was maybe just a little more than I'm used to seeing. The wort tastes smoother and maybe not as bittersweet as usual. I am planning to rack it to a keg when it's a few points from expected final gravity though. I've been noticing major improvements from doing that alone.

Curious to see what you think, Jesse. I'm pretty encouraged so far.

Hoppy Lager today for me. Recently, I bought 10 lbs. Briess 2-row Brewers Malt. I made 2 batches. Both batches had efficiency 71-72% versus my normal efficiency 78-80%. Is this normal for Briess Brewers Malt?

Everything else went great.

Hoppy Lager
3G, 1051 OG
88% Briess Brewers Malt
7% Golden Promise (getting rid of leftovers)
5% Caramel 10
32 IBU CTZ @ 65
0.5 oz. Cascade steeped 20 min. at 160F.
WLP830 slurry.

Mashed @ 150F 75min.
Yellow Balanced water.
Ph 5.33.

Not as far as I know. But it's not a particularly good malt either.

Looking forward to it as well, Jon.

The first batch was a 100% Briess Brewers malt lager. That beer tasted pretty good actually. Nice malt flavor. It's just the low efficiency that is a bit annoying.

I made a Belgian Pale Ale today, with three mistakes:
I totally forgot to add salts or acid to the mash,
I calculated via BeerSmith too much total water, so I ended up with 11 gallons of wort,
I pitched one packet of Abbey into half and one of Belle Saison into the other half, thinking I had two packets of Abbey yeast in my hand.
Other than that it was a good brew day, finished by 1:45 (5 hours).

Looks good to me. I need to brew an IPL-type beer soon. And I haven't noticed a drop off like that with Briess 2 row, but who knows - maybe they had a batch of malt not quite up to par.

One potential reason for the low efficiency could be that the grain looks very small. Not nearly as plump as other malts. Maybe the grain is not getting a good crush.

I wonder if this is barley that was hit with a drought and didn't get as plump as normal. I am way out on a limb here.

Racked 5 gallons of Saison onto blackberries, and am keeping the other half straight (lemon balm was pretty burned out when I went to harvest) but it is tasting great straight. Both halves sitting around 1.006/7 down from 1.052 with a blend of Napolean and 3724. Really liking the ease of use on the Imperial yeast, and will be trying other strains as I brew

Have a Brown Porter merrily chugging away in the basement after brewing last night/early this morning. A late-summer brew in anticipation of a cooler fall.
