OK, I'm sold. I love Vienna, just never used near that much in IPA. And those hops are really nice.

Looking forward to sampling mine.....go for it!

Jon, you should try it. 100% Best Vienna to a OG of 1.065. Makes a very nice base beer.

I'm there. Sounds great. And I definitely want to use Best. I don't like to go over 1.065 anyway on IPA. I'm making a lot less IIPA - I have to get a bunch of people over to kill it before the hoppiness fades. I'd rather make a more drinkable 1.064-65 IPA that's actually at least somewhat 'sessionable'.

Resist the temptation to add any other malt. I'd be interested to hear some other impressions.

Looking forward to hear how your turns out ken, with the cara red.

I just had some new Belgium slow ride session IPA.  It's actually a nice change of pace for an IPA.

I should find my recipe that used Mandarina because it was very tasty. 10 gallons. I want to say it was 65% Best Pils 35% Triticale. 4 Ozs of Mandarina in the last 15 min, and 3 oz of Sterling as well. Half was fermented with saison yeast, and the other half got Bells house yeast. The saison was one of the best brew I have ever made. The apa was just ok until I let it sit in the fridge for a month. Something happened that rounded it out very nicely. Hop character was very lovely.

Sounds good.

If you haven't tried, worth a pint......

"Kicking back and relaxing with a session beer requires little more than a couch, some free time, and a few pals. Slow Ride Session IPA is up for this easy-going challenge, starting with a pour of sheened gold and plenty of fluffy, white foam. A blend of eight hop varieties, led by exotic Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin, twist together brilliant tropical scents of melon, peach, lime and grapefruit for a vividly fruity aroma. The flavor mirrors the aroma, while balancing a malty-sweet yet clean start and hoppy bitterness in the back. Light bodied and extra quaffable, Slow Ride Session IPA brings the finish line to you."

Yeah, I'm just about on hop overload, if there is such a thing. Bought a lot of new varieties in the last couple months. Probably just need to brew for awhile before I buy many more.

all my mandarina showed up. quite a bit of both leaf and pellet now....must plan out how to use it all and in what brews.

I hear you. I was thinking APA/IPA, cream ale, American wheat, maybe even a non style specific pale lager for the Mandarina.

Yes Jon, I have it planned out in that Germerican IPA we talked about awhile back. Pils, vienna, bittered  with German Herkules pellets and then Hull Melon And Mandarina  whole leaf late, whirlpool, and dry. Think I scheduled it for early May. Can't wait

In the works:  House IPA, Dark Mild, Ballantine Ale clone(still trying to work this one into the schedule)

This could be an idea......

Schell’s Arminius Hoppy Pale Lager

Not known for aggressively hopped beers, Schell’s has been playing with hops a lot lately. First was the Citra Fresh-hop pilsner. Then there was Emerald Rye, a most IPA like amber lager. The Pilsner 30th Anniversary 12-pack had a version of the great Schell’s Pils hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops – a new variety from Germany. Now comes Arminius, a 70-IBU, massively dry-hopped pale lager.

As a fan of traditional German-style lagers, I take this trend with mixed emotions. On the one hand it’s good to see Schell’s trying new things. On the other, there really is nothing like a good pilsner.

Here’s my notes:

ArminiusArminius
August Schell Brewing Company, New Ulm, Minnesota
Style: Hoppy Lager
Serving Style: 16 oz. can
6.5% ABV
70 IBU

Aroma: Lime citrus and spice overlay doughy malt. A deeper hop note of mandarin oranges or dried mango hovers beneath. Balanced. Bright. Sprightly.

Appearance: Medium gold and brilliantly clear. A full stand of fluffy, white foam with excellent retention.

Flavor: Assertively bitter, but balanced. Although hops dominate the flavor profile, malt is not forgotten. Citrus – lime and lemon. Floral. Dried tropical fruits. Underlying, bready malt flavors with medium-low sweetness. The finish is dry and sharp. Crisp and clean.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium to medium-high carbonation.

Overall Impression: This is a hoppy beer that I can really wrap my tongue around. It’s lively, refreshing, and very easy to drink. Despite 70 IBUs, it doesn’t tax the tongue. Hoppy enough for IPA fans, but lager-like enough to satisfy the likes of me.
