I just read this whole thing but skipped the blog link. What follows is a summary of what I got out of it.

This thread reminds me of Poland back in 1939.

Did they have some heavy comments on what is Helles?

God, I feel like such a fool. Here I am over here, reading and translating what is considered the holy bible of German brewing.
http://www.amazon.com/Die-Bierbrauerei-Technologie-rzebereitung-German-ebook/dp/B00DF3UA1S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447163472&sr=8-1&keywords=die+bierbrauerei

and I could have just bought a kit.

So, why is it a black woman, specifically, that is beating that dead horse? Just curious...

I think this thread has either run its course, or we should pick it back up with the experiment. Like I'd said, I wondered if the Aussies either had bad palates down there or just lower standards... Sounds like both! I just want to brew the best possible beer, but I guess if I don't ever buy a pH meter, I'm not going to brew the best possible beer, so I guess I shouldn't talk sh*t about the Aussie's methods.

The exbeeriment is just one data point. Hard to extrapolate that an entire country of homebrewers has bad palates or lower standards from that.

And, the preferences reported were split between the no chill and the quick chill.

The method has always intrigued me, but I haven't had a need to try it. I agree it sounds like a terrible idea, but lots of people swear by it.

This is true, just an opinion from observation... doesn't mean much.

have an old authentic German immigrant in my basement crushing my grain

The problem with the kit isn't the yeast strain; it's the lack of old authentic German immigrant.

Get it together Marshall.

I only want to say one last thing.

All of us have benefitted from the brewing information that was brought to light by the research of others. The community knows a lot more today than we did even 10 years ago.

RPIScotty, the only reason you get to brew the Belgian beers you love so much is because other people went out of their way to find accurate information about the topic and then shared it with the community.

The state of home brew knowledge right now when it comes to lagers is a lot like pre-candi syrup Belgians. Please have a little understanding for the people who are trying to change that.

I've worked in the professional arena long enough to know that it's not what you say it's how you say it.

I agree with your "on the shoulders of giants" statement above. The difference is that those giants weren't nearly as self righteous as the folks who hijacked this thread to preach the gospel. Your passion for German lager is evident. Passion applied to the greater good is commendable. That isn't what has been on display here.

The knowledge gap for continental lagers that you describe is something that should be closed with a bit more candor. We are all susceptible to getting wound up about things we feel passionately about. It's human nature.

I think that now we can get back to the original topic which was, if I recall correctly, whether or not the Brewing Network should have won the COTY award. :-X
