Brewing Modern Lager the Old-Fashioned Way

March 19, 2024

In this webinar, Jack Hendler and Joe Connolly discuss traditional lager brewing methods and their place in the modern brewery. Jack founded Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers with two brothers in 2011, focusing exclusively on brewing lagers. In 2020, Jack and Joe started writing a book dedicated to the craft of making better lager beer, traveling the world and interviewing lager-focused breweries of all sizes, shapes, ages, and scopes as part of the research. The resulting work, Modern Lager Beer: Techniques, Processes, and Recipes, explores the rich history, culture, and technology of lager beer.

Jack and Joe aim to uncover how traditional techniques and processes can be applied by modern commercial and homebrewers alike. Along the way, they cast aside myths, misunderstandings, and misconceptions that cloud the world’s most popular beer style. In this Zymurgy Live, they share what they’ve learned along the way and what they think modern brewers ought to know in order to brew better lager beer.
