James River Homebrewers

Rusty Burrell is an award-winning homebrewer, social media personality, and blogger. With more than 10 years of homebrewing experience, Rusty has brewed over 200 batches in his garage in Richmond, Virginia.

Rusty's most notable accomplishment was winning the 2018 Stone Homebrew Competition and American Homebrewers Association® (AHA) Rally event with his Mango Maya Milkshake IPA. Rusty collaborated with Stone Brewing to scale the brew up for commercial release in 2019 and 2021.

Rusty likes to brew a variety of styles. On one end of the spectrum, he likes to focus on improving process and singling out ingredients in basic and classic styles. On the other end, he enjoys pushing the boundaries of what should go into beer—he has brewed batches with potatoes, beets, cake, and cookies, to name a few.
