Ben Edmunds

Ben Edmunds, Brewmaster

Breakside Brewery

Ben Edmunds is the brewmaster at Breakside Brewery in Portland, Oregon, where he oversees the company’s production brewery and two pub breweries. As the founding brewer of Breakside, he helped grow the company from a small brewpub into a successful regional brewery. Edmunds is a brewers’ brewer—pushing style boundaries and creating new beer experiences for all to enjoy—and has proven himself to be a powerhouse and a major contributor to the advancement of brewing, not only for Breakside but for the industry as a whole.

Under Edmunds’ leadership, Breakside has won many medals at international competitions, including eight World Beer Cup awards, 22 Great American Beer Festival medals since 2011, and Brewery of the Year honors at the Oregon Beer Awards in 2015, 2017, and 2019-22. Educated at the Siebel Institute and Yale University, he is a former president and current board member of the Oregon Brewers Guild, a judge at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, a founder of the Oregon Beer Awards, and a member of the MBAA National Technical Committee. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of American hoppy beers, sour beers, brewery leadership and management, and barrel aging. In 2023, Edmunds was the recipient of the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing.

Doug Piper is the founder and host of "Gourmet Brewing" and lives in Greenville, South Carolina. An accomplished aerospace engineer with 35 years of experience, he is also an experienced beer, mead, and cider judge. Holding certifications as a Certified Cicerone and Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) beer, mead and cider judge, he is currently pursuing additional certifications in wine and coffee to expand his knowledge and expertise. With over 40 competition judgments, including at the National Homebrew Competition, Great American Beer Festival, the Brussels Beer Challenge, and the Brazilian National Beer Competition, he is eager to share his research and insights through his "Gourmet Brewing" webinars and YouTube channel. In addition to his achievements in the fermented beverage world, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, having served on corporate boards and developed 15 patents.
